Getting There Is Half the Fun
Welcome to 4B's Special Auction Issue. All auction descriptions are by the Gavelmaster Robert Lichtman.
Joyce Katz: Hell on Wheels
Joyce's recovery continues. The surgeon changed her casts and released her from the Harmon Hospital Wednesday. After a stop here to pet the cat and see me, Su Williams drove Joyce to her home-away-from-home for the net few weeks in Yucaipa, California.
She'll be staying at the home of Ken and Aileen Forman. Since Ben and Cathi Wilson are also there, Joyce will be able to get a high level of care that would not be possible here. Our house also has very narrow hallways and doorways that prevent good wheelchair mobility.
Joyce has internet access, so feel free to send your "Get well" wishes.
The BBB Auction Begins!
Here begins the auction to benefit the Bring Bruce Bayside Fund. Bids should be sent to the auctioneer, Robert Lichtman, at the following e-mail address: fmz4sale@yahoo.com. The conduct of this auction follows the Bowers Rules, set forth briefly as follows:Each item is preceded by an alphanumeric identifier, followed by [N] (for new item) and then the item specifics. Items will be listed a minimum of three rounds, the [N] changing to [3], then [2] and finally [1] as it progresses. If a higher bid comes in prior to the next round, the counter is reset to a [3], and the cycle begins again. I will make note of items won as we progress. The exception to all this is that items receiving no bids will be designated with a [**] in subsequent listings and subject to being dropped at my whim before the three-round play-out.
A minimum initial bid is noted for each item. The first bid received prevails in the case of tied bids. Please make and raise bids only in whole dollar increments. Postage will be added to each shipment. I prefer that all bidders use the following format when placing a bid: Put each item bid for on its own line, prefaced with the item number, followed by your name, and your bid. An example: A3 Joe Fann $5.00. The current high bidder, only, will be listed. No eBay-like "bid history" will be available. And now the items for this first round:
A1 - [N] - Contrary Modes, proceedings of the World Science Fiction Conference, Melbourne, Australia, 1985, edited by Jenny & Russell Blackford, Lucy Sussex and Norman Talbot. Published by Ebony Books, Melbourne, 162 A4 pages perfect-bound in stiff covers. Contributors are Janeen Web, "Lucinda Brayford," Norman Talbot, Russell Blackford, George Turner, Van Ikin, John Baxter, Judith Hanna, Diane Cook and Bruce Wells. This was contributed to the auction by Art Widner, who suggested an opening minimum bid of $25.
A2 - [N] - From Mike McInerney, "a set of two hardcover Stephen King books, Desperation and The Regulators, shrinkwrapped along with a free 'keep you up all night' book light." This is a set he was given, having already bought one of his own, and it is still in the original shrinkwrap. His suggested minimum bid is $15, which is less than half the cheapest set available via the book search engines.
A3 - [N] - Also from Mike McInerney, a membership package for ConJose consisting of the program book, pocket program, unused neck hanging pouch-like badge holder, and a restaurant guide to San Jose. All in mint condition. Minimum bid: $5.
The rest of this round's items are all fanzines from editors whose last name begins with B and are duplicate copies from my archives:

A list of 494 fans who were active enough in 1960 to be on Ron's radar screen, with addresses and, where available, phone numbers and the speed(s) of their reel-to-reel tape recorders. Minimum bid: $3.
B2- [N] - Triode No. 19, March 1974, 34 quarto pages, edited and published by Eric Bentcliffe and Terry Jeeves for the "Daneside & Ecceleshall Dog & Cake Walking Society." Besides the editors, contributors include Don Allen, Emile Greenleaf, and "Hurstmonceaux & Faversham" with "His Final Bow," a Harrison adventure yarn. Minimum bid: $5.
B3 - [N] - Warhoon No. 12, July 1961, 50 blue mimeo pages, from Richard Bergeron. More than half the issue is Bergeron's personal writing, including mailing comments for SAPS; other contributors include Redd Boggs (reviving his "File 13" column that originally appeared in Spacewarp, then moved to Quandry and later to Agberg's Spaceship), Bob Tucker, Walt Willis (a "Harp That Once or Twice" column), Marion Zimmer Bradley, John Berry, and a lettercol with contributions from Harry Warner Jr., Jack Speer, James Blish, Eric Bentcliffe, Bill Donaho, Roy Tackett, rich brown, Betty Kujawa, Robert Bloch and others. Minimum bid: $15.
B4 - [N] - Warhoon No. 17, October 1962, 90 pages, from Richard Bergeron. Sixteen pages of Bergeron, and contributions from Charles Wells, John Baxter, James Blish, and letters from Poul Anderson, Larry Janifer, Isaac Asimov, Fred Pohl, L. Sprague de Camp, James Blish, William F. Temple, Virginia Blish, John Baxter, Harry Warner Jr., Wrai Ballard, Art Widner and others. But the heart of this issue, and nearly half of it, is Walter Breen's "Our Fan in Chicago," his exhaustively detailed account of the 1962 Worldcon -- fascinating reading. Minimum bid: $20.
B5 - [N] - Redd Boggs Selected Works, Volume One, 57 pages, edited and published in 1997 by Dave Rike. Has photo covers front and rear -- on front, Redd and his wife Gretchen in cowboy duds (Redd holding a rifle in his lap and a challenging expression on his face) taken at the 1980 California state fair); on back, Redd mailing off a letter at the Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin post office in 1956 (photo by Dean Grennell). Inside, fourteen items by Redd on a wide variety of subjects ranging from a 1958 obituary of Francis T. Laney to a review of the 35th annish of Amazing Stories and much in between. Minimum bid: $10.
B6 - [N] - Sky Hook No. 9, Winter 1949 (2nd annish), 25 well-mimeoed pages edited and published by Redd Boggs. Most of the written contents are by Boggs, plus an article by one Ken Tuttle ("You Are Semantically Confused"), a short poem by Con Pederson, and a short lettercol with contributions from Marion Zimmer Bradley, Robert Bradley and William Berger. Interior artwork by Rotsler and Ray Nelson. Minimum bid: $15.
B7 - [N] - Sky Hook No. 16, Winter 1952 (5th annish), 44 beautifully mimeographed pages. In addition to much by Boggs, contributors include David H. Keller MD ("Stone Walls"), Noel Loomis ("Your Fate is in Your Hands"), H. G. Wells ("From An Observatory"), Jack Speer ("Cryptic Communication for the Cognescenti"), "William Atheling Jr." (James Blish), Philip Jose Farmer, and a lettercol featuring Anthony Boucher, H. L. Gold, Ray Bradbury, Jack Vance, Edward Wood (he who threw away Hyphens unopened), Sam Moskowitz and others. Artwork is by Bergeron (cover and interiors), Rotsler and Terry Carr. Front cover has minor wear holes upper left corner affecting no text or artwork and some minor staining; back cover is detached. Minimum bid: $20.
B8 - [N] - Sky Hook No. 17, Spring 1953, 24 pages. Cover by Bob Dougherty, interiors by Bergeron and Maril Shrewsbury. Besides Redd's contributions there are articles by Jack Speer (the famous "Rising Standards" article about fanzine production, still applicable today), "William Atheling Jr." (still James Blish), and poems from Lee Hoffman and Terence Heywood. Back cover is detached. Minimum bid: $15.
B9 - [N] - Skyhook No. 22, Summer 1954, 22 pages. (Note Boggs has surrendered regarding the zine's name. As the editor of another two-word-titled fanzine that's often rendered as one, I sympathize.) Another Dougherty cover. Besides Redd's columns, contributors include Damon Knight (well-done book reviews), Dean Grennell (second part of a "leisurely review" of F&SF), and a lettercol with Kendell Foster Crossen, Robert Bloch, "William Atheling Jr.," Joe Gibson, Lee Hoffman and others. Minimum bid: $15.
B10 - [N] - Skyhook No. 23, Winter 1954 (7th annish), 32 pages. Cover and interiors by Rotsler; other interior art by Bergeron and Lee Hoffman. In addition to Redd's contributions, there are articles by Robert Lowndes ("And How Much An Opinion?" -- about types of criticism), Philip Jose Farmer ("White Whales, Raintrees, Flying Saucers" and a short poem), "William Atheling Jr." (who continues to be James Blish), and a lettercol with August Derleth, Sam Moskowitz, Jim Harmon, Damon Knight, Isaac Asimov, Robert Bloch, Gregg Calkins and others. Minimum bid: $20.
There will be more Redd Boggs items in the next round, which will follow in a week or so.
See you all next week with more news.
